(veeNaabhEri)
Meaning:
Oh Mother! Who is delighted with the music of instruments like veeNaa,
bhEri, and vENu. Please protect me.
Who is praised by celestials like GhONeevadanaa - vaaraahi, etc. for her
worshipful conduct. She transcends three guNas - satva, rajas, and tamas
and is revered by Brahma and Guruguha. Her eyes are like those of the dove
and She absolves sins. She is the sister of the lord of Lakshmi and has a
slender waist.
Other information:
The change that Abheri has gone through in the past two or three centuries is fairly widely known and documented. i.e how some popular vidwan sang it with a D2 instead of D1 and unfortunately it became permanently changed. However this song is still sung with D1, as composed originally by Dikshitar. The same change also needs to be done for kandhA vandharuL" that is also sung always with D1 . In both the cases, the rAgam is still Abheri but it is the old/ original Abheri with a D1. For all the other songs in Abheri rAgam, the D2 is still probably correct because that is what they are sung in, in line with current times. For nagumOmu, it is a moot point because almost everybody sings it with D2 but there are a few like Vedavalli who sing it with D1. I believe that the claim there is that Tyagaraja also composed it with a D1. - from Cuddalore S. Kumar
